Let’s say you’re talking with a friend when you discover they’ve never purchased produce outside the big walls of their convenient grocery store. “Oh my,” you think. How do you explain the difference between a tomato bought at their grocery store, to a tomato bought directly from the grower?

Well, most of them are red … nice bright red. But, they come in other colors, too.

They should be firm. Generally, you wouldn’t want to select soft tomatoes.

So the appearance of the produce would not necessarily provide the answer.

But people do go out of their way to buy tomatoes direct from growers at their local farmers’ markets. If not for appearance, then what? Probably not cost. Probably not convenience, either.

We do it for the flavor.

So if it’s just the taste, how would you ever explain flavor to the grocery store-patriot?

Actually that, in itself, is reason enough — why we drive. The fresh-picked flavor is so phenomenally-better from local-growers, that we will wait until the weekend and drive out-of-our-way to our “local” farmers’ market just because it’s the only place to buy the produce that tastes unbelievably better than from anywhere else. And for many, biting into a freshly-picked, locally-grown tomato for the very first time, is virtually identical to actually tasting a real tomato for the very first time.

The larger the grocery chain is, the more they rely on buying to fill the needs of all their stores, and for the best price. That often means looking at international suppliers. By the time you see the produce, it’s likely travelled so far — by long-haul truckers and often by ship — that the fresh-picked flavor was gone long before it ever reached Customs.

###

Well, the Future will continue to grow Mobility. Mobility is already Now.

It’s the present, and has been here for quite some time. Apple took over the cell phone market and established the next generation of cell phones with the introduction of their very first phone in the cell market. Every other company is playing catch-up and rolling out iPhone-wannabees.

What other company can pull that off?

This month, Apple ships the first iPads which are sort of like big iPhones without the phone, but with WiFi and 3G networking. That means connecting to the Web from virtually anywhere.

FarmersMarket is Mobility-Friendly Now.

I believe there are many people reading this who have stories to share about farming, about farmers’ markets, about cooking with fresh produce, and some who may even have some fabulous recipes filled with seasonal produce varieties available only at your local Farmers Markets.

If you have related archive stories, but still relate to today, those may have a place here, too. I’m offering extra editorial coverage, a first published piece for some, but unfortunately no compensation. I have had this site online since 1995, and have always used my own money to keep it that way. I hope to change that, soon, in a very reasonable and fair manner, so at least the site’s expenses are covered.

Ideas, questions, comments … please click on Field Office. I would certainly appreciate it.
